West Stanly swept in season openers vs. Cent. Cabarrus

The West Stanly girls used a stifling defensive effort and scored a number of transition baskets against the full court pressure of the Vikings for the first three quarters, building a 14-point lead midway through the third period.

However, foul trouble caught up with the Colts and West struggled to find offense in the final period as the Vikings rallied for the four-point win.

Macey Webb led West Stanly (0-1) with 13 points.

Divonne Powell paced Central Cabarrus (1-2) and led all scorers with 18 points.

Neither team led by more than four points through the majority of the first half until two Webb baskets and a Courtney Moses basket gave West a six-point lead with 30 seconds left in the first half.

West’s defense held Central to just two free throws for the first five minutes of the third while the Colts built their biggest lead of the game 48-24 on a Destiny Wilson basket with 3:38 left in the third.

The Vikings started their comeback late in the third with a 6-0 push to end the period, then took the lead in the fourth. Kayla Chapman and Emily Morgan both fouled out in the period and the Vikings took the lead for good on a Powell three-point play with 3:05 on the clock.

“We played pretty well tonight and led every quarter except the last. We had our opportunities,” West head coach Wesley Kidd said.

West Stanly hosts Northwest Cabarrus on Friday night.

An athletic Central Cabarrus squad jumped out to a fast start and used their transition offense to push the pace and tempo of the game against West Stanly as the Vikings used a big first-quarter run to build a lead enroute to an 80-52 win over the Colts.

B.J. Hill led the Colts (0-1) with 15 points and Hunter Martin knocked down three first-half three-pointers for West, finishing with 13 points.

The Vikings opend with a 9-2 run over the first 2:01 of the game but the Colts answered. A Martin three-pointer, along with a Hill three-point play and a Ryan McCormick free throw capped a 7-0 run over a 1:41 span to tie the game 9-9.

Central Cabarrus (2-1) finished the first quarter with a 14-3 push over the final 3:40 of the first half. The Vikings continued to extend the lead and Central led by double digits the rest of the way.

“We played well as a team early, but our defense was terrible and that is my fault,” West head coach John Thompson said.

Thompson also talked about playing a tough team like Central early in the season, saying, “I want to play good teams early because we play in such a tough conference.”
