After having been competitors for many years in both community leagues and at the K-8 basketball level, the first-year West Stanly Middle School Lady Colts’ basketball team claimed the Rocky River Middle School Athletic Conference (RRMSAC) title this season.
Head Coach Kristen Sides led the Lady Colts to an 8-2 regular-season mark, which gave West Middle the No. 2 seed in the RRMSAC tournament.
In the tournament, West beat South Stanly Middle 38-19 to reach the finals.
The Lady Colts then took on North Stanly in a championship finals where neither team led by more than five points.
Maddie Brown hit some crucial free throws in the final minutes to help seal the title for West.“I am so proud of the girls’ hustle, teamwork, sportsmanship and composure they showed throughout the season,” Sides said.
The West head coach also talked about the challenges of building a new team.
“This was the first time that they came together to make a unified team. Due to the talent level it was challenging to figure out the combination of players. As a coach, the various abilities, talents, hard work and dedication of each girl made the decision of playing time a difficult task,” Sides said.
“Their abilities and dedication are matched by their outstanding abilities in the classroom. These girls are role models, leaders and express their high moral values on and off the court. I am blessed to have such a wonderful group of girls and I am proud of their accomplishments as individuals and as a team.”
