Three Stanly Co. squads to send swimmers to 1A/2A state finals in Cary

Friday, February 8, 2013 — This Saturday, the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary will host the 2012-13 NCHSAA 1A/2A state swimming championships.

Albemarle, Gray Stone Day and North Stanly will all have swimmers competing for state championships.

Bailey Houlshouser, representing Albemarle, has qualified for the state finals in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle after her performance at the regionals last weekend.

The senior placed 11th in a time of 2:09.80 in the 200-yard race and was 12th in the 500-yard event with a time of 6:01.40.

Joining Holshouser in the 200-yard freestyle event will be Gray Stone freshman Cassie Bebout, who finished 7th at the 1A/2A East Regionals with a time of 2:06.96.

Bebout will also swim in the 100-meter breaststroke after finishing 10th at the regionals with a time of 1:16.04.

Gray Stone will also be represented in the 50-yard freestyle event at the semifinals by junior Jessica Roy. Roy finished in ninth place in the East Regionals with a 26.97 time.

For North Stanly, two Comet swimmers will be competing in the 1A/2A finals after their performances in the West Regionals last weekend.

Jenna Huff will swim in the 100-yard breaststroke after coming in 11th place in the regionals with a time of 1:20.32.

Whitney Throneburg qualified for the 100-yard freestyle event for the Comets with an 11th place finish in a time of 1:02.10.

In other results from the regionals, Albemarle placed teams in all three of the girls’ relay events at the East Regionals: the 200 IM relay, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle, as well as having a boys’ squad at the 400-yard freestyle event.

Gray Stone also had their girls’ and boys’ 200 IM team swim at regionals, as well as the girls’ 200 freestyle and boys 400 freestyle.

James Hathcock represented West Stanly at the West Regionals last weekend in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
