In recent high school wrestling action, the teams of North and West Stanly in the Rocky River Conference, as well as Albemarle from the Yadkin Valley, participated in regular-season matchups.
Albemarle vs. West Montgomery
and South Davidson
On Jan. 5, the Bulldogs participated in a tri-match with South Davidson and West Montgomery.
West Montgomery won their matchup over Albemarle by a score of 36-18 with the Bulldogs getting two wins by way of forfeit and earning one win by pinfall.
The pinfall win for Albemarle came in the 160-pound matchup with Quan Clark earning a 1:17 victory over West Montgomery’s Allen Morrill.
Versus South Davidson, the Bulldogs lost overall by the score of 60-12.
Both wins for the Bulldogs came by pinfall against the Wildcats, with Tyler Hatley winning in the heavyweight match for Albemarle against South’s Wyatt Beck. The other win was at 152 pounds, with Clark pinning Dacoda Ashe.
Cary vs. West Stanly
The Colts took on Cary last Saturday and competed against the Imps in a wrestling match.
Cary earned a perfect sweep of the matches over the Colts with several close decisions as well as six pinfall losses for West Stanly.
At 120 pounds, Nathan Marlow lost 9-7 to Carlos Alvarez, while Jonathan Lord (138) and Jordan Blake (145) lost their matches by one point with scores of 4-3.
Albemarle vs. Chatham Central and North Moore
On Wednesday evening, the Albemarle wrestling team took on Chatham Central and North Moore in a tri-match between three Yadkin Valley Conference teams.
The Bulldogs lost the team event 72-12 but did earn two victories, including a forfeit win at 220 pounds from Derrick Young and a pinfall win at 126 pounds by Grant Plyler over the Bears’ Mack Shehee.
North Moore and Albemarle’s matchup came down to the ultimate tiebreaker, with the Bulldogs earning the extra point because of their dual meet score, claiming a 37-36 victory over the Mustangs.
At 170 pounds, Cale Gardner pinned North Moore’s Nicholas Smith in a time of 1:26, while Derrick Young earned a pinfall win for the Bulldogs in the heavyweight class over Joe Davis in a time of 1:25.
Grant Plyler needed just :58 to pin his opponent, North Moore’s Garrett Kidd, to earn a pinfall win in the 130-pound match, and Albemarle’s Hunter Broadway pinned Ethan Morrison in 1:03.
In the final matchup at 152 pounds, Quan Clark gave Albemarle the final six points needed to tie the match with a :23 pinfall win over Cole Garner.
North Stanly at West Stanly
The Colts easily won the team matchup versus North Stanly on Thursday night, including six forfeit victories.
On the mat, Johnathan Surratt earned a pinfall win at 138 pounds over Alex Lee, while Johnathan Lord gave West a pinfall win over North’s Steven McClure.
At 152 pounds, Jordan Blake earned a 6-2 decision win over North wrestler Jessie Heidel, and Clint Gibson won at 170 pounds for West by pinfall over Darien Morris.
In the 220-pound match, Brian Ramirez won for the Colts over Jacob Cratty, and Zachary Stabler won the heavyweight matchup over North’s Jake Alexander.
