South claims overall team win at Union Academy duals

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 — The South Stanly wrestling team travelled to Union Academy over the weekend to take on Monroe, Forest Hills, Metrolina Christian and the host Cardinals in dual matches on Saturday.

With a total team score higher than any of the other schools in the competition, the Bulls won a tiebreaker with Monroe and Forest Hills to claim the overall team championship.

The three teams finished with 3-1 records, thanks in part to a tiebreaking win for the Yellow Jackets over South Stanly 43-42 after the two teams finished tied 42-42. The third criteria used to break the tie, the team with more take downs, gave the Jackets the win.

South Stanly had four undefeated wrestlers at the event: Cody Shields (106), Christian Honeycutt (113), Freddy Vences (160) and Sawyer Bartlett (170).

South Stanly beat Monroe by a score of 42-39, and Union Academy by the count of 60-24.

Against Metrolina Christian Academy, the Bulls won 60-15.

South Stanly is scheduled to host East Montgomery on Wednesday and hosts the Bullpen Duals on Saturday. The weekend wrestling tournament will also feature West Stanly, Monroe and Porter Ridge.
