Clear skies and cool temperatures greeted a record number of participants in the Uwharrie Running Club’s Ninth Annual Turkey Trot 4.2 Mile Run.
The 396 runners and walkers topped last year’s then-record crowd of 365.
The first 250 participants that brought at least three canned goods or non-perishable food items were given a Turkey Trot t-shirt. The canned food drive helps fill the shelves for the Stanly County Christian Ministries. Runners brought 1,272 pounds of canned goods to the Turkey Trot, up from 772 pounds.
The run is more social than competitive. It is designed to help people start Thanksgiving Day in the calorie deficit column.
Salisbury’s John Lanier best described the atmosphere, “Now this is how you should start Thanksgiving Day! Thankful to be healthy enough to run, to be able to help SCCM and to share the sunrise with almost 400 others.”
The West Stanly High Future Business Leaders of America partnered with the Uwharrie Running Club to make the event a success.
