Three Stanly County soccer teams qualified for the 2012 NCHSAA soccer postseason and had their first-round matches on Wednesday night.
1A Playoffs
Union Academy 6
Albemarle 1
Monday’s home match for the Albemarle Bulldogs featured a matchup against a program that the Bulldogs and other members of the Yadkin Valley Conference will see more of next season.
On a windy, cold Halloween night, the Union Academy Cardinals travelled to Albemarle for a 1A first-round matchup with the Bulldogs.
The two teams played an even first half, but the Cardinals scored five times in the second half and went on to a 6-1 win over Albemarle.
Union Academy (11-5) kept possession of the ball for long stretches of time in the first half but were unable to generate any significant offensive chances until the 18th minute, when Will Walters crossed the ball into the penalty area for Jake Beeson, who scored
After Albemarle (8-7) keeper Ross Plyler made a big point-blank save in the 23rd minute, the Bulldogs got a great chance to score a minute later when Jose Castenada was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. The senior made no mistake with the opportunity, scoring to tie the match 1-1.
In the second half, Walters curled in a shot from 15 yards out that started a five-goal push by the visiting Cardinals.
Beeson scored again in the 56th and 61st minutes to complete the hat trick, while Union Academy got goals in the waning minutes from Aharon Gonzales and Nathaniel Peralta.
“In the second half we dribbled the ball instead of playing as a team; it was on us,” Albemarle Head Coach Jake Staton said.
The Bulldogs graduate eight seniors from this year’s team.
Bishop McGuinness 3
Gray Stone 2
The Gray Stone soccer squad wrapped up their season with a 3-2 overtime loss at Bishop McGuinness.
2A Playoffs
Trinity 7
West Stanly 0
The West Stanly soccer team wrapped up their 2012 season on Wednesday when the host Trinity Bulldogs scored twice in the first five minutes and went on to a 7-0 win over the Colts.
West Stanly finished the season 5-12-1 overall and 4-9-1 in Rocky River Conference play.
