Albemarle, West split doubleheader

Sunday, February 7, 2010 — The basketball teams of West Stanly and Albemarle split their games Friday.

In their second game in as many nights that went down to the wire, the Albemarle girls had several chances under a minute to take the lead.

However, West Stanly would rebound and hit free throws down the stretch to ean a six-point non-conference win over the Bulldogs.

Savanah Miller led West Stanly (14-5) with 19 points, while Paige McConlogue led Albemarle (7-9) and all scorers with 22 points.

The Colts would build a 14 point lead at halftime and led Albemarle at several points in the game by 10 before the ‘Dogs rallied late to cut West’s advantage to a single bucket.

Trailing by two points with 47 seconds left, Albemarle missed a layup along with a second-chance shot after an offensive rebound.

West Stanly pulled the rebound down and would hit free-throws down the stretch for the win.

“With this being our third game in three nights, I was pleased with how we hung in the game tonight,” Albemarle head coach Stephanie Lowder said.

It was another classic that went down to the wire Friday night between the boys’ teams of West Stanly and Albemarle.

An Elliott Drake’ tip-in that would have give the Colts a buzzer-beating win over the home Bulldogs was ruled after the buzzer and Albemarle held on for the win.

Drake led West Stanly (8-11) with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Jace Whitley had 11 points and even assists for the Colts.

Demetrius Hamilton paced the Bulldogs (13-3) and all scorers with 16 points.

Terrance Christian was top rebounder for the Bulldogs with 10 boards to go along with his six points. Albemarle outrebounded the Colts 33-28 in the game with a 15-4 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Colts trailed by four points after a three-pointer from Hamilton with 40 seconds left in the final period.

Jace Whitley hit a deep three-pointer to cut it to one and West fouled Albemarle on the ensuing inbound play to put Shane McConlogue on the line.

McConlogue missed a free throw and West’s Kiki Smith rebounded, came down the floor and put up a runner on that missed and Drake’s tip-in was ruled after the buzzer.

Albemarle outshot West Stanly in the game, hitting on 21-of-47 from the floor (44.7 percent) while the Colts were 21-of-57 (36.8 percent).
