Friday, November 16, 2012 —
Led by Brittany Cox’s 20 points and Jodie Lemons’ 16, Pfeiffer University rolled to a comfortable 85-57 win over Brevard College in non-conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night.
The Lady Falcons shot 44 percent from the field improving to 2-0 after the home-opening win while the Tornados fall in their 2012-2013 season opener.
Pfeiffer would open the contest on an immediate 14-3 run over the first six minutes Lemons would tally the first five followed by Kellie Rhoney dropping in the final five. A Carter Williams jumper five minutes later would keep it an 11-point, 18-7 advantage for the Lady Falcons before a pair of Cox free throws gave the hosts their largest first half lead at 20-7 with 10:20 to play before the break.
Brevard would trim the lead down to six as Tuccoa Brackett and Micheala Watkins contributed to a quick 6-0 run while Shelby Wolfe helped keep it a half-dozen deficit with two free throws later at the 3:01 mark. From that point, Pfeiffer would close out the first 20 minutes on a 13-2 run capped off by another Lemons triple with seven seconds showing on the clock.
Cox would pour in 14 of her 20 on the night in the second half starting with a layup 1:38 in later adding a three ball to give Pfeiffer their largest lead of the night at 23, 51-28. The Lady Falcons would continue to cruise in the second half getting up as much as 30, 60-30 on a Goddess Steele layup at the 12:14 mark, before Brittney Washington put the black and gold up a game-high 33 with her fast break layup at the 9:41 mark of the second.
Pfeiffer’s defense would also play a big role in Wednesday night’s win forcing 20 Brevard turnovers and turning them into 32 points. The Lady Falcons would limit the Tornados to 13 percent shooting from behind the arc after a 23 percent shooting first half.
Behind Cox and Lemons, Williams would also reach double-figures dropping in 13 for the Lady Falcons while Rhoney concluded with 10. Lemons would come up two boards shy of her second-straight double-double.
Pfeiffer will now move quickly into Conference Carolinas play on Saturday hosting King inside the Merner Gym. Tip time is set for 2 p.m.
