The opening round of the 2012 Yadkin Valley Conference tournament for the boys’ varsity basketball teams saw No. 2 Albemarle host No. 7 Chatham Central on Tuesday night while the No. 6-seeded South Stanly Rebel Bulls went on the road to take on No. 3 North Moore.
Albemarle 67
Chatham Central 36
One of the staples this season from the Albemarle boys’ basketball squad that finished the regular season ranked in the Top 10 in the state in the NCPreps.com 1A poll has been its pressure defense.
In Tuesday’s opening game of the conference tournament, the Bulldogs played a straight up man-to-man defense and used much less pressure than they had a number of games this season.
The man defense, along with a few minutes of full-court pressure in the third quarter, limited the Bears to 25 percent or less from the field in the first three quarters as the Bulldogs cruised to a 67-36 win over Chatham Central.
Albemarle takes on North Moore tonight at 7:30 p.m. at East Montgomery High School in Biscoe.
