Wednesday, March 21, 2012 —
The West Stanly baseball squad suffered two losses on Friday and Saturday, dropping their overall record to 3-6 and their Rocky River Conference record to 2-1.
Central Academy 3
West Stanly 2
On Friday night, three unearned runs in the fourth inning led to the first win ever for the Central Academy Cougars over the Colts on the baseball diamond.
Matt Ward took the loss for West, dropping his record to 0-3 this season despite giving up no earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Ward also was 2-3 at the plate.
In the top of the seventh, West got an RBI single from Daren Honeycutt and an RBI double from Baron Whitley, but left the tying run on base in their last at-bats.
West Stanly stranded runners at third base in four different innings and could not bring them home.
Mount Pleasant 3
West Stanly 2
The Colts travelled to Mount Pleasant on St. Patrick’s Day and suffered a non-conference 3-2 loss to the Tigers.
Austin Whitley (1-1) pitched 6.1 strong innings for the Colts, but two errors in the seventh inning led to the loss. Whitley did not issue a walk in the game and struck out seven Tigers batters.
In the bottom of the seventh, Zac Brown came on in relief and got a strikeout, but an overthrow at second base on a stolen base attempt and another fielding error scored the winning run for Mount.
“Our pitching staff has been lights-out all year,” West head coach David Lee said.
“All of our losses have been close; when the defense and hitting catches up with our pitching, we should be very competitive.”
Nathan Burleson is scheduled to start tonight for the Colts in their home game at 7 p.m. against Forest Hills.
