Stanly's five high school volleyball teams reach state playoffs

Albemarle and West at home Saturday, others on the road

Friday, October 19, 2012 — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the playoff pairings late Thursday for the 2012 state volleyball playoffs. All five high school varsity volleyball teams from Stanly County will be playing on Saturday.

In the 2A bracket, the West Stanly Colts, champions of the Rocky River Conference this season, are a No. 1 seed from the RRC with an 18-2 record. West hosts Trinity (9-12), the No. 3 team out of the PAC-6 Conference.

The other 2A local team, North Stanly, finished second in the RRC and will be on the road at Surry Central (16-6), the No. 2 seed from the Northwest Conference.

The three other Stanly high school varsity volleyball squads play in the 1A classification and all have qualified for the playoffs.

Albemarle will host Bessemer City on Saturday night at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs (19-5) moved up to the No. 2 Yadkin Valley Conference seed after beating Gray Stone and West Montgomery in this week's YVC tournament.The Yellow Jackets (9-12) are a No. 3 seed from the Southern Piedmont Conference.

Gray Stone (16-4) will be on the road in the opening round Saturday with the No. 3 YVC seed as the Knights travel to North Stokes (10-12) to face the No. 2-seeded Vikings from the Northwest Conference.

South Stanly (10-13) gets the No. 5 seed from the YVC and travels to Union County to face the No. 1 seed from the Rocky River Conference, the Union Academy Cardinals.

    In local playoff games on Friday, South Stanly hosted Albemarle in a third-round 1A baseball playoff matchup, while West Stanly hosted Piedmont in the 2A softball third-round and Gray Stone traveled to Chatham Central for a 1A third-round softball game.
