Monroe wins at home over Colts

Sunday, October 7, 2012 — After a lopsided first half, the Colts’ play improved in the second half allowing just one touchdown to the Redhawks in a 68-0 loss.

The offense for West Stanly (0-8, 0-4 RRC) had problems moving the football in the first half, gaining just one first down, but the Colts were able to get three first downs in the second half. Ryan McCormick was the leading rusher for the Colts with 38 yards on 15 carries, with Diego Solorio adding five rushing yards as well.

Through the air, Ryan McCormick was 2-of-12 for 24 yards with only one interception. Solorio hauled in a catch for 19 yards, with Cody Cline getting the other reception.

Much as they have all season long, Charlie Eudy and Colton Hathcock led the West defense in tackles. The Colts defense also came up with a goal-line stand in the third quarter, including denying the Redhawks (5-3, 4-0 RRC) on a 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

Matt Shutt also came up with a play in the fourth quarter that was emblematic of the team’s never-quit efforts, running down a Monroe ball carrier the length of the field and stopping him at the one-yard line to prevent a score.

“One of the biggest things as we go through [the season], getting beat as we are, the guys tell us that they know what to do; we just have to make the play,” West head coach Jared Bennett said.

“The guys are continuing to fight; our goal in the second half was to move the ball and score and keep them where they were. Instead of rolling over, our guys pushed through and continued to try.”

West Stanly travels to Union Academy (2-5, 1-3 RRC) on Friday night. The Cardinals lost to Forest Hills 42-6.
