Falcons top Trojans

Friday, March 1, 2013 — A layup by Jodie Lemons with 2:48 to go gave visiting Pfeiffer the lead for good scoring a huge 62-58 road win at Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Tuesday night.

Kellie Rhoney would account for the Falcons’ final six points helping Pfeiffer to clinch the No. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament. The Trojans fall to 15-10, 11-10 with the loss.

Six lead changes occurred throughout a tight second half as Pfeiffer (21-5, 16-5) trailed by four with 12:39 remaining after a basket by Tamara Nesmith. Just 20 seconds later, Christina Harvey got the lead down to two on a layup before Bridget Rothert hit a crucial three, after a block on the other side of the floor by Brittany Cox, to give the Falcons a 46-45 lead.

Harvey capped off 7-0 run with a layup at the 10:02 mark of the second before the Trojans (15-10, 11-10) turned a deficit of three into an advantage of three thanks in part to three-straight Kirstin Mobley buckets.

As an Alyssa Luebs jumper put Mount Olive back up one with 4:08, Lemons came up with her layup at the 2:48 mark before a Rhoney bucket and four straight free throws allowed Pfeiffer to win.

Harvey led the Falcons with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, climbing up to No. 10 on the Falcons’ all-time scoring list. Lemons finished one point and rebound shy of Harvey with 15 and seven.

Pfeiffer will wrap up the 2012-2013 regular season on Friday night hosting Queens at 5:30 p.m. inside the Merner Gym with Senior Night festivities to take place before tipoff.
