West Stanly falls to 0-2 in RRC with home loss

Monday, September 24, 2012 — It was Youth Football Recognition Night at the Colt Corral this evening. This featured young men who likely will one day be wearing green and black a few years down the road. This would be part of the celebration of West Stanly High School’s 50th year of existence.

In spite of the 0-5 start for the Colts, these players, managers, trainers and coaches always are shown great support as the bleachers were nearly filled to capacity. This would be due to the youngsters displaying their best moves to the side of the field. The halftime show was even more amusing with cheerleaders, band members, students, and youth league football players doing a dance routine for the capacity crowd. The Colts mascot also danced with graceful moves.

West Stanly went into the game tonight against Piedmont High School, who had a  1-4 record, seeking their first win of the year. Even though quality plays were made by the Colts on both sides of the football, West would fall to the Panthers tonight by the count of 36-3.

The Panthers of Piedmont from Unionville in Union County, were led by Brandon Gentry, who gained 199 yards on 14 carries and would account for the game’s first three scores.

Piedmont (2-4, 1-1 RRC) would also score on a one-yard plunge by Matt Fisher along with a 65 yard punt return to the house by Cameron Lewis.

The Panthers would add a two-pointer, a safety as opposed to a conversion, when West (0-6, 0-2) snapped the football over punter Colton Hathcock’s head on a 4 and 29 from their own 1 yard line.

West was able to get back into the scoring column tonight on a 27-yard field goal by Diego Solario in the last second of the first half. Solario would also catch three passes for 61 yards.

Though the outcome was not what the Colts were seeking, there were the athletes who had shining moments.

Colts senior quarterback Spayne Furr would complete 10 of 22 passes for 160 yards with one untimely interception at the Piedmont 1-yard line as the Colts were driving toward the end zone at the 3:30 mark of the third period.

Junior utility player Ryan McCormick also caught four passes for 62 yards along with his completing two passes, one of them being a fake punt on a fourth and seven as he threw to Solario, who advanced the ball to the Piedmont 45 yard line.

Defensively, Colton Hathcock was doing impressions of Ray Lewis as he led the Colts with 12 tackles and forced a fumble. Defensive backs Blaine Long and Caleb Thompson would make heads-up plays in recovering three Piedmont fumbles.

“We moved the ball. We scored. Now we have to finish. We have come a long way at this point and we will shock people toward the end of the season. The fans give us great support and they know there is a difference,” West Stanly Head coach Jared Bennett said.

That shock could very occur next Friday night as the Colts travel to the Cougars of Central Academy in Monroe. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m
