West Mont. extends lead over Bulldogs; West Stanly undefeated in RRC with win

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 — With most of the Stanly County high school volleyball teams reaching the halfway mark through their respective conference schedules, only three weeks remain for teams to jockey for position for the state playoffs as well as making runs at the regular-season titles.

Monday’s Matches

West Montgomery 3

Albemarle 0

The Bulldogs showed streaks of playing flawless volleyball at home Monday night against the top team in the Yadkin Valley Conference, the West Mont-gomery Warriors.

Albemarle rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second set but struggled with service and receiving errors in the latter part of the match to fall 3-0 to the Warriors.

Scores of the match were 25-22, 27-25 and 25-17 in favor of visiting West Montgomery (14-1, 11-0 YVC).

Akela Branch led the Bulldogs (12-4, 8-3) with 10 kills, seven aces and seven digs. Tasmin Mackand Samantha Blue each added five kills, while Morgan Smet had 18 assists and Anna Yang led with eight digs.

After losing the first set by just three points, the Bulldogs trailed again 17-9 in the second set before a series of Branch aces helped Albemarle go on a 13-4 rally to a 22-21 lead.

West Montgomery was able to force the set to extra points and won it 27-25 when an Albemarle kill attempt went into the net for the set’s final point.

Again, the Bulldogs rallied from a deficit in the final set, trailing 6-1 to bring the score close midway through. The Warriors, after leading 15-13, pulled away from that point for the final result.

The win gives West a three-game lead over Albemarle and Gray Stone in the standings with five conference matches left in the regular season.

West Stanly completed their first round of conference play with a 3-0 sweep of North Stanly.
