The South Stanly Rebel Bulls varsity football squad made the long trek to Chatham County on Friday for a Yadkin Valley Conference road game against the Chatham Central Bears.
The Bulls spoiled the homecoming night for the Bears and held off a spirited late effort by Chatham in a 41-25 win.
Anthony Smith had a monster night for South Stanly (4-2, 1-1 YVC) as the senior running back carried the ball 13 times for 204 yards and touchdowns. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown as well.
South Head Coach Tasker Fleming talked about Smith’s efforts, saying, “He has stepped up this year. He has a 3.7 GPA and is just looking for the right place to go to college and play football.”
Fleming added that if college scouts would have seen Smith’s efforts against Chatham Central, they would come to the conclusion that he could play at any level of football.
“He was carrying tacklers all night, struggling for every inch. Not once in the game was he brought down by a single tackler; it always took two to bring him down,” Fleming said.
Devante Hamilton also had a strong night for South. He added 115 yards on 20 carries as well.
Fleming also gave credit to all 10 members of the offensive line that played Friday night, along with assistant coach Bob Myers.
Defensively, South forced four first-half turnovers, including intercepting quarterback Chase Fuquay three times, with Div. I college prospect Jordan Starnes returning one pick 30 yards for a touchdown.
Fleming gave the credit to his defensive coordinator, Brad Frodge and assistants James Lilly and Danny Dennis for their work with the defensive squad, which he said gave their “best effort of the year.”
The South head coach also said that the Bulls played a large number of players in the game, saying that the experience that they gained “will help in the long run.”
South Stanly returns home on Friday night to take on East Montgomery (2-4, 1-1), who suffered a 45-13 loss to North Rowan in their last game.
