The offense of the North Stanly Comets girls’ basketball team has become accustomed to an up-tempo, high-scoring offense this season, including creating points with its full-court pressure.
However, against the athletic Forest Hills squad, the Comets went to a zone defense that slowed the tempo of the game considerably when the Jackets chose to shoot from the outside.
Despite the slower tempo that resulted in the Comets’ lowest point total of the season, North’s defense held the Jackets to 22 percent shooting in a 42-30 win to claim the Rocky River Conference regular season title.
Asia Caple and Lindsey Burleson had 10 points each to lead North Stanly (22-0, 13-0 RRC). Caple knocked down 2-of-4 shots behind the three-point line and had a team-high 14 rebounds. Burleson was in foul trouble for part of the game but still finished with seven rebounds and three blocks.
Sherita Thomas led Forest Hills (15-7, 10-3) with nine points.
The Jackets struggled for offense throughout the game, hitting just 4-of-25 (16 percent) from the field in the first half. In the second half, Forest Hills pushed its numbers up to 28.1 percent (9-of-32). For the game, the host Jackets hit just three shots from the three-point arc.North’s offense fared slightly better overall, but one hot-shooting quarter helped the Comets build their lead. North was 14-of-52 overall (26.9 percent) but shot 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) in the third quarter.
Jenni Speight gave North a big lift in that third period, knocking down two three-pointers on a 10-3 Comet run over the first 2:22 of the period.
“I went out there and made some shots; it really got our momentum going,” Speight said.
North jumped out to a 6-0 lead on two three-pointers from Caple in the first minute of the game, but didn’t score again until the second period.
Forest Hill missed its first nine shots of the period and trailed 6-3 after one quarter.
North led by as much as 16 in the third period but the Jackets narrowed the gap to nine points in the final two minutes.
Regarding his team’s defense against the athletic guards of the Jackets, head coach Greg Speight said, “We did a good job staying in front of them. They are quick.”
The North coach also talked about winning his seventh regular-season title in 10 years, saying, “Our first mission is accomplished.”
North Stanly’s final regular season game is Friday night at West Stanly (5-18, 4-9).
