Cox nears triple-double in win

Wednesday, February 7, 2012 — SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Junior Brittany Cox posted a double-double with 32 points and 13 rebounds in 33 minutes of action leading Pfeiffer University to a 90-64 victory at Converse College on Saturday afternoon.

Cox, who flirted with a triple-double in the win, helped the Lady Falcons move to 11-9 overall, 6-5 in league play, while the Valkyries drop to 2-18, 2-9.

Pfeiffer got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half until a layup by Haley Grimsley put the Lady Falcons up for good at 20-18 with 8:34 to play. Grimsley’s bucket started a 14-1 run to give the visitors a 13-point lead. A Kaela Bellefeuil triple with just under two minutes remaining gave Pfeiffer its largest first half lead at 20 before carrying a 17-point lead into the half.

A pair of Cox treys just four minutes into the second half gave the Lady Falcons a 24-point lead, 59-35, before a later 9-0 run got Converse back to within 14 at the midway point of the second. A quick burst of 12 straight points courtesy of a pair of Cox triples, a three-point play from Grimsley and a long-range basket by Kellie Rhoney allowed Pfeiffer to cruise to the end.

Cox’s 32 on the day was thanks in part to a half-dozen triples. Flirting with a triple-double, Cox ended with six assists, three blocks and two steals in the win to go along with the 13 boards. Bellefeuil followed with 14 on the day while Shelley Reese added 11.

The Lady Falcons will now get back into divisional play Wednesday, traveling to Mount Olive for a matchup with the Trojans beginning at 5:30 p.m.
