The varsity basketball teams of West Stanly High School continued play in their regular-season schedule in the Rocky River Conference on Friday night at Cuthbertson.
West Stanly’s teams continue their season Tuesday night at home against North Stanly. The Comets’ games against South Stanly on Thursday night were postponed to Jan. 31.

The West Stanly girls’ varsity basketball squad made the long bus trip down to Waxhaw to take on third-place Cuthbertson.
A low-scoring third-quarter led to a 55-48 road loss for the Colts to the Cavaliers.
Sarah Talley led West Stanly (6-9, 1-5 RRC) with 11 points.
Taylor Helms led three in double figures for Cuthbertson (9-7, 5-1) with 23 points. Brinna Ingram and Morgan Carlson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The West Stanly boys faced off Friday night against a high-profile Cuthbertson squad that is currently ranked No. 11 in the state in all divisions according to MaxPreps.com. as well as having a point guard that has verbally committed to Wake Forest in 6’3” junior Shelton Mitchell.
Despite going down 12-0 at the start of the game, the Colts kept the game close into the third quarter, eventually losing to the Cavaliers 89-59.
Ryan McCormick led West Stanly (5-10, 2-4 RRC) with 21 points while B.J. Hill added 14 points.
Mitchell led four in double figures for the Cavaliers (15-1, 6-0) with 22 points.
The Colts kept pace with Cuthbertson in the first half after the Cavs opened with a 12-0 run, scoring 23 points in the second quarter and trailing by 11 at halftime.
West then cut the lead down to nine points with five minutes left in the third before another Cavs run pushed the lead out to 22 points and Cuthbertson went on to the win.
“We actually played fairly well until midway through the third quarter. [Cuthbertson] is very talented and plays very hard,” West Stanly head coach John Thompson said.
“Our defense wasn’t very good, especially in transition. If we took a quick shot or turned it over, they converted it into points.”
