Comet boys top West Stanly in OT; Colt girls beat North Stanly

Sunday, February 17, 2013 — Tonight at the Chandler Gymnasium, a filled to capacity crowd from West Stanly and North Stanly experienced the makings of what a high school basketball game should be all about.

Girls

West Stanly 59

North Stanly 46

The significance of the final regular season game was more than it being Senior Night. Both West and North girls were jockeying for position in the Rocky River Conference standings before tournament play this Monday at Monroe High School.

For North, a win would seal their fourth place standing. For West, it was clearly a must win situation. With both squads knowing all that would be at stake, the Colts and the Comets both vied with a necessary sense of urgency.

The difference was that the Colts recognized this a bit more than the Comets did tonight as West Stanly pulled the mild upset over favored North Stanly by the count of 59-46.

Could this contest have some slight comparison to the fight between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed that made the Rocky movie series so successful?

Both West and North went at each other in the same manner that Rocky Balboa kept coming after Creed.

Four seniors from North Stanly’s boys basketball team were honored tonight and the underclassmen positively wanted these guys to go out on a winning note for the regular season. After the players from both West and North put on excellent scoring exhibition in their exchange of leads, the Comets would emerge victorious in the overtime frame by a score of 77-71.
