Stanly Co. Gymnastics opens 2012-13 competition season with first-place win

Monday, December 10, 2012 — The gymnasts from Stanly County Gymnastics started their season off with a bang. The group traveled to Rock Hill S.C. to compete at the Crown of the Carolinas the weekend of Nov. 17-18.  

Competing in the Child A was Ali Broadaway who brought home the gold medal on balance beam and a fourth place medal on uneven bars.

Isabella McGee competing in the Child B division strutted her stuff on the floor to capture the gold medal and fourth place on balance beam and she finished with the bronze medal in the all around competition.

Margaret Huckabee competing in the Child D division turned in a stellar performance bringing home the bronze medal on uneven bars, the gold medal on vault and floor and the silver on beam and in the all around competition.  

Competing in the E age division were Mia Huckabee, Kate Cotton and Avery Carrick.

Huckabee captured the gold medal on vault, balance beam and floor exercise. Cotton finished second on bars, beam and floor and third on vault. Finishing third on beam and floor and fourth on vault and bars was Carrick. This trio of girls swept the podium in the all around competition with Huckabee bringing home the gold with a score of 37.65, Cotton brought home the silver with a score of 37.45 and Carrick captured the bronze with a score of 37.325.

Competing in the F age division Reagan Efird finished second on vault, third on bars and beam and with a 9.45 she captured the gold on floor. Her all around score of 37.85 helped her capture the all-around gold medal, as well as the Queen of the Session title because her score was the highest all around score of the enter session, which consisted of 81 girls.  

Emma Ehmann brought home the fourth place finish in the all around competition and secured a silver medal on floor exercise.  Caroline Thacker finished seventh on vault and fourth on balance beam.

This young group of girls,  many competing for the first time as USAG gymnasts, had combined scores high enough to take the first-place team award in the Bronze Division.

Level 8 Competitor Madalynn Raynor finished fourth on sixth on bars and floor and fifth in the all around competition.

Representing Stanly County in the Level 7 Competition was Taegan Lowder and Megan Smith.  

Smith, competing in the C age division finished seventh on balance beam and with a score of 9.20 brought home the bronze medal on floor exercise. Lowder competing in the A age division finished fifth on floor exercise and with a score of 9.15 captured the silver medal on vault.

The girls are coached by Lynn Luther, Tiffany Luther and Dianne Austin. They will travel to Raleigh in January to compete at the New Years’ Invitational.

    In local playoff games on Friday, South Stanly hosted Albemarle in a third-round 1A baseball playoff matchup, while West Stanly hosted Piedmont in the 2A softball third-round and Gray Stone traveled to Chatham Central for a 1A third-round softball game.
