Bulls deliver win over West Mont.

Sunday, October 7, 2012 — The marquee matchup of the Yadkin Valley Conference that garnered the largest contingency of high school media may have been the game in Spencer, but a YVC matchup in Mount Gilead between visiting South Stanly and host West Montgomery proved to be as equally entertaining and competitive as the Rebel Bulls and the Warriors fought for a win to stay tied for second place in the conference with whomever lost between Albemarle and North Rowan.

South Stanly got a huge night from their senior tailback Devante Hamilton and rallied from behind four different times in a 35-24 win over West Montgomery.

The Bulls (6-2, 3-1) had their first two drives stalled by the Warriors (4-4, 2-2) then muffed a punt on their third drive, giving West Montgomery a chance with a short field.

The Warriors took the lead but it did not last long as South Stanly got a 70-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson to tie the game in the second quarter 7-7.

West Montgomery took a 14-7 lead into the halftime locker room with a touchdown, and South again rallied, driving the length of the field to start the third quarter.  Hamilton scored the first of his four touchdowns in the game and the Bulls pulled into a 14-14 tied.

The South defense came up with a big stop on a Warrior drive in the third quarter, allowing only a field goal.

Hamilton then broke off a 70-yard run late in the third quarter to again overtake West Montgomery 21-17.

The Warriors retook the lead again in the third with a touchdown to lead 24-21 but the final period would belong to the Rebel Bulls. A long drive by South was capped off by Hamilton’s third touchdown of the night for a 28-24 lead.

In the final minutes as South Stanly was running the clock out, the blocking up front  for South was perfect, according to head coach Tasker Fleming, and Hamilton sealed the win with an 80-yard touchdown run.

“I am pleased with our effort; if we can play with this focus every Friday, we can be a tough team to beat,” Fleming said.

“We played four quarters of football in a battle and the atmosphere of a third-round playoff game. We didn’t back down from the challenge and showed more confidence.”

South Stanly will host North Moore (0-7, 0-4) this Friday night. The Mustangs suffered their 23rd consecutive loss after losing 45-0 to East Montgomery.
