The cross-country squads of North and West Stanly traveled to Wingate University Tuesday to run on the NCAA collegiate course at a Rocky River Conference meet hosted by Piedmont.
Girls
The ladies team took off on a stampede start at 5 p.m. sharp and headed out around the lake, over the river and through the woods before doubling back for the finish.
The Colts were led by Kayla Redman in fifth place with a time of 22:27. Lizzie Lambert, Katie Stegall, Taylor Ferree, and Evan Biggers went 7-8-9-10 for the points with Alyssa Robinson and Katlyn Speights on varsity with 13th and 14th place finishes.
The JV squad was: Kristen Scasko 16th, Kayla Bates 18th, Kaley Carpenter 19th, Nicole Kippes 21st, Miranda Rushing 26th, Savanna Barbee 37th, Madison Whitney 38th, Sydney Richardson 43rd, Haley Watson 48th, Shelby Sedberry 52nd, and Rebekah Honeycutt 54th. The Colts took the meet with a low score of 39.
Sophomore Jenna Huff led the Comet squad with a second place finish in a time of 20.36.
Megan Hunsucker placed fourth, Holli Chandler was sixth, Sarah Siebert 20th and Shelby Poplin in 24th rounded out the points.
Katherine Skinner and Gentry Grubb rounded out the varsity squad in 28th and 30th respectively.
In JV reserve: Samantha Chandler in 31st, Sydney Dunn 34th, Shannon Harward 36th, Nicole Medlin 42nd Hailey Chandler 49th and Kylie Cook 56th.
The Comet girls placed second behind West with a score of 56 and well ahead of Piedmont, Union Academy, CATA, Monroe, and Forest Hills.
Boys
The boys team ran first on the dusty trails of this flat and fast course.
The Colts were led by Jonathan Thompson with a fourth place finish and a time of 17:56.
Also for West, Kirby Carpenter came in eighth, Jeremy Clark in 11th, Baron Whitley in 12th, and Zac Brown finished in the points in 14th.
Austin Eudy and Micah Speights rounded out the varsity squad in 17th and 24th respectively.
The Colts’ JV squad: Logan Hucks 29th, Collin Hartmann 30th, Jonny Russell 32nd, Daniel Jenkins 40th, Alex Wilson 46th, Ryan Grubbs 50th, and James Hathcock 52nd. The Colts place second with 49 points to host Piedmont’s 35.
For the Comets, senior Brandon Myers led the squad with a 10th place finish in 20:01.
Erik Rabut was 13th, Steven McClure 26th, Jake Thompson 33rd, and Jackson Hart finished in the points at 43rd with Blake Underwood right behind him at 44th.
The Comet boys’ squad placed fifth out of the seven-team field with a final team score of 125 points.
