Thursday, September 30, 2010 —
Tuesday's county cross country action was at Piney Point Golf Course in Norwood. After running tough courses such as Chuck Morehead & City Lake Park, Gray Stone, Albemarle, South Stanly, West Montgomery and East Montgomery runners enjoyed racing on the reasonably flat golf course.
The fall weather, combined with a fast course, allowed runners to stretch it out and put in some of the fastest times of the season.
South's Alex Thompson ran the 3.1 mile course in seventeen flat to win the race. Gray Stone's Harrison Latimer took second in 17:14. Nick Allen of East Montgomery was third in 17:54.
West Montgomery, led by Christian Bradley (4th-17:59), edged Gray Stone 45-47 to win the meet. South Stanly was third with 56 points followed by East's 77 and Albemarle's 137. Ben Melo (22-20:17) was the top Bulldog .
In the girls race, South's Erin Thompson's (22:10) fifth place finish kept the Gray Stone girls from a perfect score. The Knights won the meet with 16 points.
Illa Jones won the race with a time of 20:51. Second, third and fourth went to fellow Knights Janna Featherstone (21:18), Caroline McLeod (21:39) and Jennie Wagner (22:03).
South was second with 55 points. East third with 90 points, followed by West Montgomery (103) and Albemarle (115). Baily Holshouser was the top Albemarle runner. She finished in seventh place with a time of 22:30.
North Stanly and West Stanly both were off this week.
