West Stanly High School hosted the 2013 Stanly County Wrestling Meet this past Saturday morning.
With an undefeated record of 3-0, the host Colts claimed the overall team championship, beating South Stanly (42-27), Albemarle (60-9) and North Stanly (75-0).
South Stanly came in second place in the team standings with a 2-1 record including wins over Albemarle (54-24) and North Stanly. The Bulldogs placed third with a 1-2 record, beating North Stanly 36-18.
Ethan Morgan was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the county meet, winning the 132-pound championship for West Stanly. Morgan won by pinfall over Albemarle’s Hunter Broadway and South’s Robert Beachum.
In other individual championship results, Cody Shields was the 106-pound champion for South and Pavin Chunn claimed the 113-pound title.
At 120 pounds, West Stanly’s Nathan Marlow won two forfeits and a pinfall win over South’s Patrick Cruz in 3:10 to claim the title.
The 126-pound title went to Albemarle’s Grant Plyler, who went 3-0 including a forfeit, a pinfall win over Rebel Bull Nicholas Carpenter and a 6-4 decision win over West’s Jonathan Surratt.
John Lord claimed the 138-pound title for West Stanly with two forfeits and a :56 pinfall win over South’s Dakota Lewellen.
Jordan Crowell won the 145-pound title for South including a 3-2 decision over West’s Jordan Blake and a pinfall win over Albemarle’s Jaylyn Potter.
At 152 pounds, junior Wesley Gordon earned three pinfall wins for West, pinning South’s Montrell Brewer, Albemarle’s Quan Clark and North’s Jessie Heidel.
Freddy Vences improved his record to 26-4 as an individual, winning the 160-pound title with a forfeit, a pinfall win over Albemarle’s Caleb Smith and a 14-6 majority decision win Over West’s Mark Balmas.
Sawyer Bartlett won the 170-pound title for South including a 12-4 majority decision over West’s Clint Gibson and a pinfall win over North’s Darien Morris.
Erik Ramirez claimed the 182-pound title for West with a pinfall win over South’s Michael Furr.
At 195 pounds, West’s Luke Alexander and South’s Brandon Lowery were co-champions. Both went 3-0 with two forfeits and one pinfall victory.
Co-champions were also crowned at 220 pounds: West’s Brian Ramirez and North’s Jacob Crotty.
In the heavyweight class, Tyler Hatley of Albemarle won two forfeits and got a 7-3 decision over West’s Zachary Stabler for the title.
On Saturday, all four Stanly County wrestling squads will wrestle in their respective conference tournaments. West Stanly hosts the RRC tournament while Albemarle and North Stanly will travel to Chatham Central for the YVC tourney.
