Monday, December 31, 2012 — The Carolina Christian School varsity basketball teams hosted their annual holiday tournament on Thursday and Friday nights, with both Lions teams reaching the championship games.

Friday night the Lady Lions hosted the defending North Carolina Christian School Athletic  State champions, the Fayetteville Street Christian Lady Patriots (9-1) from Asheboro Both teams entered the game undefeated and the game lived up to its billing.

CCS (9-0) started quickly, with junior center Chloe Burris scoring nine of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter.

The Lady Patriots kept it close however, trailing by just 4 at the break. In the second half the Lady Lions got a much needed offensive jolt from freshman forward Elizabeth Franklin who came off the bench to score 10 quick points. The Lady Patriots (9-1) were led by their outstanding back court tandem Emily Edwards and Jordan Lanier, with 17 and 18 points.

Chloe Burris, who scored 21 points  pulled down nine rebounds, was named the tournament’s MVP.

Chelsea Burris, with a game high 11 rebounds, was joined on the all tournament team by senior point guard Sarah Grigg who contributed seven points and four steals.

“I couldn't be more pleased with my team's effort and execution tonight. We played smart and efficient basketball and were able to beat a very good team,” CCS head coach Randy Burris said.

The Carolina Christian boys’ squad was beaten by Fayetteville Street Christian 88-61 in the men's championship game.

The Lions (7-4) were close in the first quarter, but faltered in the second and trailed 42-28 at halftime.

Battling foul trouble, the Lions fell further behind in the third period as the Patriots (8-3) continued to move the ball and get high quality shots.

Luke Moore was high scorer for the Lions with 13 points. John Brewer, the tournament’s MVP, led the Patriots with 23 points. Moore joined Brewer on the all tournament team.

“Our  basic fundamentals were not there tonight. We have to do the little things to improve and we will continue to work on them,” CCS head coach Marcus Dilligard said.

In opening round play at the Carolina Holiday Classic on Thursday, the Carolina Christian men and women both won to advance to the championships on Friday night.

The Lady Lions downed the Carmel Christian Lady Cougars 55-28.

Chloe Burris led the Lady Lions with 16 points, while Ashton Franklin added 14.

Kaydi Pinion scored seven for the Lady Lions and did a great job of penetrating and finding Burris and Franklin in the post.

“Our perimeter defense was pretty good in the first half. On offense we got consistent penetration and made good passes that led to high percentage shots,” CCS head coach Randy Burris said.

The CCS boys’ team overcame a slow start to win over Carmel Christian 55-28.

The Lions (7-3) were sluggish on defense in the first quarter but picked up the pace as the game wore on. The Lions pushed the ball well in the second quarter.

Justin Sellers led CCS with 19 points, while Luke Moore had 14 and Steven Carr added 12.

“We were a little rusty coming off the break, but got it going well enough to take care of business,” CCS head coach Marcus Dilligard said.
