Tuesday, December 30, 2008 — The West Stanly girls’ basketball lost in the semifinals of the CMC-NorthEast Holiday Classic Monday night 53-36 to J.M. Robinson.
Kathleen McSwain led West Stanly (5-5, 4-1 RRC) with 16 points. Sabrina Jarvis led Robinson (8-4) and all scorers with 17.
The high-pressure defense of the Bulldogs led to an 8-2 lead, but West would rally. A Brooke Benton three with 16.5 seconds left in the opening period made it 11-7.
Back-to-back three-point plays by McSwain would give the Colts a 13-11 lead with 5:26 left in the second.
The Colt defense would hold the Bulldogs to three made shots from the field in the second quarter as West trailed by three at the half.
The Colts opened the third period strongly and retook the lead 21-20 on an Emily Huneycutt bucket with 5:35 left in the quarter.
J.M. Robinson responded with a 16-4 run over the remainder of the period to pull ahead 36-25 enroute to the win.
West Stanly will play NW Cabarrus today at 4 p.m. in the third-place game at J.M. Robinson.

The West Stanly girls advanced to the semifinal game with a 76-33 win on Saturday against Central Cabarrus.
Kathleen McSwain led the Colts with 16, with Jenna Strickland scoring 13 and Hayley Page and Savannah Miller adding 10 as well.
