Colts lose in CMC Classic

Basketball

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 — The West Stanly girls’ basketball lost in the semifinals of the CMC-NorthEast Holiday Classic Monday night 53-36 to J.M. Robinson.

Kathleen McSwain led West Stanly (5-5, 4-1 RRC) with 16 points. Sabrina Jarvis led Robinson (8-4) and all scorers with 17.

The high-pressure defense of the Bulldogs led to an 8-2 lead, but West would rally. A Brooke Benton three with 16.5 seconds left in the opening period made it 11-7.

Back-to-back three-point plays by McSwain would give the Colts a 13-11 lead with 5:26 left in the second.

The Colt defense would hold the Bulldogs to three made shots from the field in the second quarter as West trailed by three at the half.

The Colts opened the third period strongly and retook the lead 21-20 on an Emily Huneycutt bucket with 5:35 left in the quarter.

J.M. Robinson responded with a 16-4 run over the remainder of the period to pull ahead 36-25 enroute to the win.

West Stanly will play NW Cabarrus today at 4 p.m. in the third-place game at J.M. Robinson.

The last season that the North Stanly football program enjoyed a victory over rival Albemarle was back in 1993, when the Comets blanked the Bulldogs 20-0.
Jack Gaster was in his first year as head coach of Albemarle with a squad that year that had just seven seniors, compared to Dick Gresham’s squad that had 16 seniors

  • Charles Curcio.jpg Friday night is still the greatest night of the week

Of all the many sports that I cover during the year,  no sport requires more physical and mental effort, demanding more attention to detail than the coverage of high school football.
Football has long been arguably the most covered, most watched high school sport for many years, but with the advent of the internet and video cameras no bigger than a cell phone, everywhere you look people are covering prep football like never before.
