Thursday, December 25, 2008 — From today through New Year’s Day, the Christmas holiday season brings us some of the best sports to watch on television.
No matter how much that the cursed BCS has lowered the value of the bowl games, they will still be fun to watch.
The NBA features some great games on Christmas Day.
ABC will have a doubleheader featuring San Antonio at Phoenix and an NBA Finals rematch with the Boston Celtics at the L.A. Lakers.
The best roundball game of the day might be the opener of the TNT doubleheader with Cleveland hosting Washington.
LeBron James continues his tour-de-force this season that could lead to a huge free-agent contract in 2010.
Dec. 27 will be great for Stanly County fans because of former West Stanly standout Quan Sturdivant playing the Meineke Car Care Bowl with his North Carolina Tarheels against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
N.C. State could have a tough test on Dec. 29 at the Papajohns.com Bowl against Rutgers at 3 p.m.
South Carolina fans will be watching the Gamecocks against Iowa at 11 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Georgia faces Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl while Clemson and Nebraska face off at the Gator Bowl.
The grandaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl, should be a really terrific game as Joe Paternos’ Penn State faces off with Pete Carroll’s Southern Cal Trojans.
It just feels wrong to have the national title decided a week after New Year’s Day, but Florida against Oklahoma should be good.
Most of us will be watching college football on New Year’s Day but a few rogue hockey fans will have the 2009 NHL Winter Classic on their screens.
This year, the Detroit Red Wings play the Chicago Blackhawks at the friendly confines of Wrigley Park.
The game in Chicago was born out of a college hockey game played outdoors between the University of Michigan and Michigan State in 2001, in front of 74,554 fans.
Montreal and Edmonton played an outdoor NHL game in 2003 and the Winter Classic was reborn last season when Sidney Crosby’s shootout goal beat the Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills.
This holiday season, I plan to be enjoying all the games along with the comfort and holiday cheer of my first Christmas with my beautiful wife Laura.
Have a Merry Christmas.
