Thursday, August 28, 2008 — Week two of the football season has two Stanly teams looking for their first win and one looking to win again on the road.
Sun Valley at West Stanly
The Colts will open their 2008 season against a tough 3A opponent in Sun Valley.
Last week, the Spartans dismantled another 3A powerhouse, Eastern Randolph, 48-27.
Three seniors for Sun Valley are college football prospects, including quarterback Andy Capone.
The Wingate recruit was 18-of-21 through the air for 216 yards, four TD’s and no interceptions.
His main target, Vincent Davis, who is verbally committed to North Carolina, had seven catches for 85 yards and two TD’s.
West Stanly will need to control the tempo of the game and use long, time-consuming drives to keep the Spartans offense off the field.
South Stanly at Blacksburg, S.C.
The Rebel Bulls will travel 45 minutes south of Charlotte to face a Blacksburg Wildcat team coming off a 27-8 loss.
Blacksburg surrendered 260 total yards and were plagued by turnovers in the game.
South Stanly rolled last year 47-14 and should do the same again Friday night.
North Stanly at East Montgomery
Comets head coach Jim Mason described Friday’s opponent as a team in a similar situation to his.
Both teams have new coaches and the growing pains that go along with that.
This matchup could prove to be the closest of the night.
Albemarle has Friday off and will face West Montgomery next week in what will be a strong test for both teams.
