South ladies continue to excel ... who will step up and run the ball well?
Thursday, July 24, 2008 — Once again a number of Stanly County softball teams have done very well in Dixie Softball and are off to various spots across Dixie to play in a World Series.
Last year, Endy Optimist hosted the Darlings World Series and did a great job with it. Hopefully, someone across the county can host in the future.
The South Stanly Belles have a good shot with ace Nikki Whitley on the mound. Whitley was outstanding throughout her freshman season at South Stanly and could well dominate in Louisiana when the Belles open on Aug. 1
Regardless, all the girls will be interesting to follow and represent Stanly County well when they travel.
• With football season close at hand, this season should showcase a number of excellent running backs.
At Albemarle, the talented tandem of Jamar Corpening and A.J. Little compliment each other extremely well.
Corpening is the change-of-pace runner that makes great cuts and makes people miss while Little is a sprinter in a weight-lifter’s body that runs over people.
Both had big seasons last year and can only be expected to be better this season.
Down at South Stanly, James Watkins is great on both sides of the ball. Last season, Coach Luke Little made sure Watkins was on the field when the opposition had the ball. He’s that good at linebacker.
But late in the year, Little had Watkins carrying the ball more and the 215-pounder ran well. He is a power runner with excellent speed and with more help at linebacker this season, Watkins will be toting the ball more often for the Bulls.
At North Stanly, the Comets lost their top runner from last season, E.J. Griffin. Although on the small side, Griffin was a touch inside runner with excellent moves. He will be tough to replace.
The situation at West Stanly is much the same as Akeem Huntley and Damarquis Jackson both graduated. Both were inside power runners that sustained long drives with bursts of four to five yards.
Back this year is Jeremy McCormick, who has breakaway speed, something that Huntley nor Jackson possessed. If McCormick can stay healthy, he could be the big-play player the Colt offense did not have last year.
There’s considerable talent just waiting for an opportunity to take the ball and run. Who steps up and delivers will be interesting to watch.

Friday night is still the greatest night of the week
Of all the many sports that I cover during the year, no sport requires more physical and mental effort, demanding more attention to detail than the coverage of high school football.
Football has long been arguably the most covered, most watched high school sport for many years, but with the advent of the internet and video cameras no bigger than a cell phone, everywhere you look people are covering prep football like never before. -
