Colt girls, South boys get victories
Thursday, January 8, 2009 — Wednesday night’s double header between the varsity boys’ and girls’ teams from West Stanly and South Stanly split, as West won the girls’ matchup and South claimed the boys’ matchup in overtime.
West was first to put points on the board via Randi Harris followed with a 3-pointer from Sara Kimrey, who led the Lady Colts in scoring.
South’s Alison Greene was the first to score for the Lady Bulls, being the first of five players to score in the first quarter.
Myriah Carpenter scored her first five points in the second quarter, and led South in scoring for the evening.
The Lady Colts took over in the second half thanks to scoring and strategy, beating the Lady Bulls by 15.
In the boys’ game, South started off early showing who owned the court. Demarius Allen scored eight of South’s nine points in the first quarter, and was the evening’s as the top scorer.
The energy of both teams increased throughout the the second and third quarters, with South leading by one point at halftime, and having a tied score at the end of the third quarter. West’s Elliot Drake racked several points in the third quarter, making him the teams lead scorer.
The fourth quarter came down to the last 2.5 seconds when both teams were tied at 49. Tyler Eudy threw a pass from out of bounds intended to reach an open Colt at the other end, but the pass hit one of the ceiling lights.
After a time out, the ball was in South’s possession, but a basket shot by Terry Shankle failed to fall through, thus leading to overtime.
The game again came down to its final seconds in overtime, with South leading by two with 12.7 on the clock. Upon the Bulls defense kicking in and a few failed shot attempts by the Colts, the Bulls won the game.

Football has long been arguably the most covered, most watched high school sport for many years, but with the advent of the internet and video cameras no bigger than a cell phone, everywhere you look people are covering prep football like never before. -
