Comets keep streak alive, top W. Stanly
Thursday, January 8, 2009 — It had been 18 days since the North Stanly girls’ basketball team had played a game, a win at home over Albemarle.
The Comets started slowly Tuesday night against a tough West Stanly team that had played three tough games in a holiday tournament, finishing in third place.
North was able to overcome woeful first-half shooting and earn their 10th straight win 51-39.
Alexis Atkins returned from her shoulder injury to lead the Comets (11-1, 10-0 RRC) with 19 points.
Tempestt Mack added 18 points while Brandin Bennett came off the bench and gave the Comets a spark with her 10 points.
Savannah Miller led West Stanly (5-6, 4-2 RRC) with 15 points.
North Stanly opened the first quarter by shooting just 4-of-20 from the floor and the game was close from the beginning.
Comet Tempestt Mack and West’s Miller would each hit three-pointers to start the game.
West then hit 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the opening period as neither team led by more than three points.
Brandin Bennett’s bucket with 20 seconds left in the period gave the Comets a one-point lead after one quarter.
The two teams exchanged leads twice in the second quarter as West would take the lead for the remainder of the half on a Kathleen McSwain basket with 3:41 on the clock.
Emily Huneycutt connected on a three-pointer with 20.4 seconds left in the first half to give the Colts a 26-18 halftime advantage.
North would would only hit on 7-of-36 shots in the first half, but the offense would wake up in the final half.
Down 28-20 with 5:26 left in the third, North went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to narrow the gap to two points.
North Stanly took the lead for good with 4:45 left in the fourth quarter on a Brandin Bennett basket that made the score 36-35.
The Comets then would convert on 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
“I don’t think we got a lot off of our press tonight. West attacked us well and good teams can do that. You’ll have nights that you won’t shoot well and still win,” North head coach Greg Speight said.

Friday night is still the greatest night of the week
Of all the many sports that I cover during the year, no sport requires more physical and mental effort, demanding more attention to detail than the coverage of high school football.
Football has long been arguably the most covered, most watched high school sport for many years, but with the advent of the internet and video cameras no bigger than a cell phone, everywhere you look people are covering prep football like never before. -
