Making the most of the New Year
Sunday, January 4, 2009 — I don’t like New Year’s resolutions.
For starters, I have never been able to stick with them and I would guess that most of you have problems sticking to yours as well.
That is not meant as a criticism as much as it is an observation that our standards for those resolutions are far too high.
Losing weight is a great example. People make resolutions to lose far more weight than is healthy or recommended.
I have always been taught that the best weight loss plans, which always include a lot of exercise, are designed for you to lose about five pounds the first week and 1-2 pounds each additional week.
Always see a doctor before you start, but in college, I lost 65 pounds that way.
I watched what I ate and worked out almost every day and the pounds came off slowly.
They came back, unfortunately, which is why I also recently lost about 60 pounds after my weight had really gotten out of hand.
The point is, if you are going to make resolutions, make ones that are reasonable.
Besides, why does it have to be that we can only make changes in ourselves whenever the new year rolls along?
We should be able to choose to do things better any date, whether it’s Jan.1, May 20 or Dec. 28.
Quitting smoking or drinking are also both popular resolutions, but I bet a lot of people make those without any idea of how to get there.
Make sure to seek professional help before you make huge lifestyle changes.
Do not make New Year’s resolutions just to make them. Resolve to do things differently because it is what your heart leads you to do.
I will keep working hard here at the sports desk because you all deserve a good sports section, not just because it sounds good to make a resolution about it.
Let’s make 2009 a special year for the right reasons.

All of us at The Stanly News and Press send out our condolences to North Stanly head football coach and athletic director Jim Mason.
His mother, Anne Newcomb Kenward, of Morehead City, passed away on Dec. 28. I was contacted this week by a member of Coach Mason’s family who asked if I would share this information with you.
She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Kenward, and her son, Jim Mason. Jr. and wife Andrea of Richfield.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2005 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
