Tuesday, May 11, 2010 —
Runners took over the streets of downtown Albemarle for the Sixth Annual Beach Blast 5K hosted by the Uwharrie Running Club. With 400 runners registered to race, it was expected to be a fast one.
Daniel Yeakley and Andrew Smith didn't disappoint the crowd at the finish line as, for the second time in three years, one second separated the first two spots.
The former West Stanly cross country team mates raced in their "old school" green singlets as they raced together the entire way. The two are now competitors as Yeakley runs for UNC-Pembroke and Smith is at Wingate.
Yeakley held off Smith at the finish for the victory in 16:29. Despite the warm weather, Yeakley broke the course record of 17:15 set last year by Bill Shires. Smith finished in 16:30.
A smiling Smith said, “It was great racing with my best friend again. Somebody had to win, and 99 percent of the time it’s him. Today was no exception.”
Matt Tyndall finished third in 17:21. Tyndall, winner of the 2008 Beach Blast 5K by a shoulder's length, said of the Beach Blast, "I love this race, the course is fantastic. I'm going to miss it." Tyndall graduated from Pfeiffer Saturday and is moving to Colorado.
In the women's race, Salisbury's Lynn Pitson defended her championship. Pitson's 20:17 shaved 43 seconds off the course record she set last year.
Jade Farlow, member of the UNC-Greensboro cross country team, took second in 21:17. Wadesboro's Nicole Cox ran the 3.1 mile course in 23:14 to take third.
The Uwharrie Running Club and sponsors put on an outstanding race. Many runners commented on how they enjoyed the volunteers at every turn on the course, goody bags, and the 5K sugar cookies at the finish line.
