Tuesday, October 23, 2012 —
The West Stanly varsity volleyball squad came up just short of winning the Rocky River Conference championship last season, finishing in second place to Piedmont and reaching the second round of the playoffs.
This year, the Colts lost just one time in conference after running off 12 straight wins in the RRC, finishing the regular season with a 13-1 conference record to claim the conference championship.
Head coached by Lee Lewis, the West Stanly Colts entered this year’s 2A state playoffs as the No. 1 seed from the RRC with an overall record of 18-2.
This year’s senior players (Devan Fincher, Itccel Jaramillo, Emily Morgan, Alex Poplin and Jennifer Roberts) have only lost six matches in their high school careers, including going 15-0 and 19-1 in their JV careers as freshman and sophomores.
Last season, West finished with a 20-3 overall record, having won 38 of 43 matches over the past two varsity seasons, reaching the second round.
Tuesday’s Match
West Stanly 3
North Stanly 0
After having suffered their first Rocky River Conference loss of the season to Cuthbertson 3-0 last Thursday (25-16, 25-16 and 25-17), West Stanly closed out their regular season with a road match against county rival North Stanly having already clinched the RRC title and the No. 1 RRC seed in the playoffs.
North Stanly finished tied for second place in the conference with Cuthbertson but took the No. 2 RRC seed for the playoffs because of winning both matchups this year against the Cavaliers.
After taking the opening set, the host Comets stormed back to win the second set. However, West Stanly took the final two sets for their 18th win overall this season winning three sets to one.
Scores of the match were 25-18, 12-25, 25-14 and 25-19 in favor of the Colts.
Emily Morgan had 17 kills to lead West Stanly, adding four blocks, while Courtney Grant added 10 kills and eight blocks.
Alex Poplin had a strong night for the Colts with 21 assists, while libero Devan Fincher had 16 digs. Itccel Jaramillo added 12 digs and 15 service points.
For North Stanly (15-5, 11-4), Alexis Poolos led with six kills, 10 blocks and six service aces.
Jackie Poolos added five kills and five aces, while Nicole Poolos had seven assists.
The Comets will be on the road for their first-round matchup at Surry Central.
In JV action, the West JVs finished with a 17-1 overall season record, sweeping the Comets JVs in straight sets of 25-11 and 25-16.
