The high school wrestling teams of South and West Stanly competed in a 17-team field at the Monroe Redhawk Invitational wrestling event held this past Friday and Saturday.

The Colts posted a third-place finish as a team overall with 156 points, finishing just a half-point behind Buford (S.C.) for second place and 10 points behind first place South Point (S.C.).
Tyler Balmas gave West Stanly a gold medal in the event. Wrestling in his first tournament, he took first place in the 160-pound weight class in his first varsity wrestling event. Balams pinned Buford’s Kyle Norcia in the semifinals and pinned Forest Hills’ Fale Mapuletuli in the finals.
Wesley Gordon took a silver medal for his second-place finish at 152 pounds, pinning South Stanly’s Josh Lewellen in the semis but suffering a pinfall loss in the finals to Hickory Ridge’s Ethan Jones.
Pavin Chunn gave his West Stanly team another second-place finish from the event in the 113-pound class. Chunn earned a 13-6 decision win over Ronnie Watts in the semifinals, then was pinned in the finals by South Points’s Marvin Gallette.
Also medalling for West Stanly was Jonathan Surratt, who took third place in the 126-pound class, while Jordan Blake added a third-place finish at 138 pounds.
Nathan Marlow (120 lbs.) and John Lord (145 lbs.) also medaled, finishing in fourth place.
South Stanly finished in 11th place out of the 17 teams at the event and had three wrestlers to medal, led by Cody Shields’ efforts at 106 pounds.
Shields finished in second place for the Bulls, pinning Richmond Senior’s Trinity Hunt and Anson County’s Oscer Moses in the first two rounds. Shields then lost a close 6-4 decision in the finals to Cox Mill’s Keaton Dawkins, ending up with a silver medal.
Brandon Lowery also took a medal for South Stanly with a third-place finish in the 220-pound weight class. Lowery pinned his first opponent, Cox Mill’s Joshua Blucher in 1:28 and lost his semifinal matchup with Richmond Seniors’ Dieon Davis in an 8-1 decision. Lowery then bounced back in the consolation bracket with pinfal win over Hickory Ridge’s Nick Russo (3:38) and Anson’s Cedarious Barrett (:43).
The other medalist for South Stanly was Sawyer Bartlett in the 182-pound division where Bartlett won fourth-place. Bartlett pinned his first opponent, Cox Mill’s Andrew Watt, in 1:37, then suffered a loss in the championship bracket to Forest Hill’s Malik Clyburn by pinfall in 3:25. Earning a forfeit win in the next round, Bartlett lost in the third-place match to Kenneth Hester of Richmond Senior by decision 13-5.
South Stanly tops Union Academy, North Moore
The Bulls hosted the Cardinals and the Mustangs on Tuesday night for a tri-meet.
South Stanly claimed team wins over Union Academy (66-18) and North Moore (53-30).
The Bulls got forfeit wins over the Cardinals from Cody Shields (106), Nicholas Carpenter (126), Josh Lewellen (152), Jason Smith (160), Michael Furr (170) and Sawyer Bartlett.
South Stanly got pinfall wins at 113 pounds and 132 pounds. Christian Honeycutt pinned Krizan Kaylee in 0:35 at 113 pounds, while Jordan Carpenter earned a pinfall win for the Bulls over Nicholas Vlach.
Union Academy posted three pinfall wins in the match. Cardinal Jordan Rushing pinned South’s Patrick Cruz at 120 pounds in a time of 1:36, while Peter Mantione won for the Cards at 138 pounds with a pinfall win in 2:37 over Jeff Helms. Robert Rushing posted the other win for Union Academy, pinning Camden Diggs at 145 pounds in a time of 1:43.
Against North Moore, the two squads only had one forfeit in the match as South’s Brandon Lowery earned that forfeit win at 220 pounds.
South’s Christian Honeycutt pinned Chris Renzi in 0:55, while Cruz earned a win for south by pinning chase Richardson in 0:44.
Nicholas and Jordan Carpenter both pinned their opponents at 126 and 132 pounds, respectively, with both pinning their opponents in under two minutes.
Lewellen pinned North Moore’s Cole Garner at 152 pounds in a time of 1:49, while Michael Furr pinned Erick Benitez in 1:57.
Bartlett won his match at 182 pounds over North Moore’s Nicholas Smith in a time of 1:45.
North Moore got pinfal winns at 138, 145, 160, 195 and 280 pounds.
