Knights swept at home by Queen’s Grant

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 — The varsity basketball teams of Gray Stone stepped out of Yadkin Valley Conference play on Monday night for a doubleheader against the Queen’s Grant Stallions, a charter school in the Mint Hill area that will join the YVC next season.

Gray Stone will host the Community School of Davidson on Wednesday night.

Gray Stone’s defense clamped down on the Stallions Monday night at home but the offense of the Knights never got on track in a 44-22 loss.

Gray Stone held the Stallions (10-3), coached by former N.C. State and WNBA player Rhonda Mapp, to 44 points, which was the third lowest score that Queen’s Grant has scored this season.

Conversely, the man-to-man defense employed by the Stallions held Gray Stone (4-10) to their second-lowest point total of the season.

Mary Cadle led the Knights with six points and five rebounds.

Shaigna Wentz, who scored 35 in the Stallions’ game earlier this season against  Gray Stone, paced the Stallions with 20 points, while sophomore guard Ciera Rucker added 12 points.

Queen’s Grant jumped out to a 9-2 lead midway through the opening period before  a Cat Harward three-pointer and a Shannon Efird bucket with 59.1 seconds left pulled the Knights to within two.

In the second quarter, Gray Stone narrowed the gap to three , but Queen’s Grant answered with a 7-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half.

In the second half, the Knights had just three made baskets as the Stallion defense created a number of turnovers and limited Gray Stone’s shots on offense.

“Our defense was OK tonight, we could have done better,” Mapp said, saying that her main focus this season for the team in practice has been on defense and intensity.

Gray Stone head coach Robert Stack said he was pleased with his team’s overall effort, especially defensively, adding that his team “put it all out on the floor.”
