In high school wrestling action just prior to the holiday break, the West Stanly wrestling team hosted Rocky River Conference opponent Cuthbertson on Dec. 20, while South Stanly wrestled at the Porter Ridge Pirate Invitational on Dec. 22.
West Stanly vs. Cuthbertson
The Colts got a number of victories in their home match with the Cavaliers, winning the team event by a score of 42-27.
The win helped West Stanly to improve to 5-4 on the season.
At 120 pounds, Pavin Chunn earned a 7-1 decision win for West over Noah Walker, while Colt wreslter Erikcel Ramirez pinned Jake Moore in the 182-pound match.
Luke Alexander of West Stanly got a pinfall win for the Colts at 195 pounds over Aaron Torez.
In the heavyweight matchup, West’s Zachary Stabler earned a 6-4 decision win over Cav wrestler Terrence Kasminoff.
West got forfeit winsfrom Jonathan Lord (138), Mark Balmas (152), Wesley Gordon (160) and Brian Ramirez (220).
The Colts are scheduled to wrestle tonight at Monroe.
South Stanly at the Porter Ridge Pirate Invitational
The Rebel Bulls took on wrestlers from West Forsyth, East Davidson, South Mecklenberg, West Davidson and North Davidson in the Porter Ridge Pirate Invitational held Dec. 22.
Although the Bulls did not win any of the team matchups, South Stanly did earn some wins on the mat, and came close to a team win in a narrow loss to North Davidson 44-36.
In the match against North Davidson, South got pinfall wins from Christian Honeycutt (113), Josh Lewellen (152), Sawyer Bartlett (170) and Brandon Lowery (195).
In the matchup with South Mecklenberg, the Bulls got pinfall wins from Cody Shields (106) and Lewellen (152), along with a decision win by Bartlett at 170.
Versus West Davidson, South Stanly got pinfall wins from Shields (106) and Camden Diggs (145) along with a 17-5 majority decision at 195 pounds from Lowery and a close 11-10 decision win by Bartlett at 170.
Against East Davidson, South got a pinfall win in 2:46 from Lewellen at 152, a 10-4 decision win by Bartlett at 170 and a technical fall win at 106 pounds by Shields.
South is scheduled to wrestle at East Montgomery on Jan. 9.
