Clear skies, low humidity, below average temperatures and a well-manicured course provided perfect conditions for fast times at this week’s Yadkin Valley Cross Country Meet at Piney Point Country Club.
The Gray Stone Knights placed seven runners in the top nine of both the boys and girls race to easily sweep the meet hosted by South Stanly.
Boys’ Results
In the boy’s race Gray Stone’s Josh Roland crossed the finish line in 17:45 to win the race.
Fellow Knights Reid Huckabee and Dennis Collins were hot on his heels as they finished in second and third with times of 17:53 and 18:02 respectively.
West Montgomery’s Chris Pipkin took fourth by crossing the finish line in 18:14. Gray Stone finished with a team score of 17 points. West Montgomery was second followed by East Montgomery, South Stanly and Gray Stone.
Josh Lewellen was the top runner for South. William Ivey was the first Bulldog to cross the finish line.
Girls’ Results
Gray Stone’s Caroline McLeod, coming off an ankle injury, raced the 3.1 mile down and back course in 20:46 to take first place in the girls race.
Sarah Goodnight of Gray Stone was second in 21:34 with South’s Ashelyn Murphy coming in third in 21:51.
Knight runners, Rebecca Brickner (fourth-22:06) and Kelsey Kizer (fifth-22:18) took the next two spots.
Bailey Holshouser was Albemarle’s first runner to cross the finish line. She placed sixth and ran the course in 22:40.
Gray Stone won the meet with a team low of 19 points. South took second with 54, followed by West Montgomery, East Montgomery and Albemarle.
