W. Stanly loses on the road at Union

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 — The high school football season continued for the varsity squad at West Stanly High School as the Colts played their third straight Rocky River Conference road game this past Friday night with yet another trip in to Union County.

This trip southward, West Stanly faced a Union Academy squad that featured a running back, senior Rasheed Rushing, that had previously gained over 300 yards against North Stanly and entered Friday’s game against the Colts with 804 total rushing yards this season.

Rushing had a big rushing night for the Cardinals as Union Academy moved up in the standings with a 62-9 win over West.

The senior tailback had five rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals (3-5, 2-3 RRC) from distances of 18, 71, 11, 62 and 27. Union also got two rushing scores from Antonio James and a passing touchdown from Aaron Mack to Joe Malone for 34 yards.

Union Academy took a 7-0 lead in the first quarer with a 20-yard touchdown run from James, but the Colts would answer and cut the lead to just four points on a 42-yard field goal from Diego Solorio.

Rushing answered with an 18-yard touchdown run and the Cardinals built a 28-3 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Union Academy buiilt a 41-3 lead before the Colts responded on the scoreboard. Spayne Furr found Ethan Morgan for a 65-yard catch down to the Union Academy 10-yard line. Furr then capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Caleb Thompson three plays later from six yards out for the score. The Colts missed the two-point conversion and the score stood at 41-9.

Union Academy would put three more touchdowns on the board enroute to their third win this season.

West Stanly (0-9, 0-5 RRC) forced four fumbles in the game and got another turnover on defense with an interception by Ryan McCormick.

“We struggled offensively to begin the game; our defense made several big plays but we couldnot put it all together,” West Stanly Head Coach Jared Bennett said.

The Colts host Cuthbertson for homecoming this Friday night. The Cavs dropped to 4-5 and 3-2 in the RRC with a 41-24 loss to Monroe.

West may be closer to getting B.J. Hill back onto the football field. Hill practiced with the team this week in non-contact drills.

“Before [B.J.] comes out [onto the field for a game], we want to make sure that it is in the best interest for him and for the team,” Bennett said.
