South Stanly homecoming sweetened by home victory

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 — The South Stanly varsity football team took the field at K.L. Young Memorial Stadium on Friday night looking to keep their winning streak alive while adding another defeat to a North Moore Mustangs program that had lost 23 straight games on a streak dating back to 2010.

With another strong ground performance and big contributions from the defense, the Rebel Bulls kept pace with North Rowan for second place in the Yadkin Valley Conference with a 42-6 win on homecoming night over the Mustangs.

Devante Hamilton continued his brilliant senior season at running back for the Rebel Bulls (7-2, 4-1 YVC) with 268 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns.

Fullback Anthony Smith added 126 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while South quarterback Russ Weiker through a 20-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson for the Bulls’ other offensive touchdowns.

South Stanly’s defense provided the final points of the night as linebacker Ryan Coley returned one of the team’s two interceptions on the night 51 yards for the score.

The only score of the night for North Moore (0-8, 0-5) came in the second quarter when quarterback Landon Auman found Xavier Richardson for a 78-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-6 with just over eight minutes left in the second quarter. That touchdown was the Mustangs’ first points in four games after being shutout in back-to-back weeks by North Rowan and East Montgomery.

South Stanly’s defense held the Mustangs to just six net rushing yards on 21 attempts while the South rushing offense exploded for 446 net yards on 40 carries.

“We definitely did not play like the week before at West Montgomery early on tonight,” South Stanly Head Coach Tasker Fleming said.

“It goes back to how you prepare for the week; we knew they were struggling. We were going through the motions a little [early] but we woke up in the second quarter.”

Fleming also added that the North Moore squad pulled their JVs up to the varsity squad and cancelled the JV game this week with South Stanly.

Regarding his team, Fleming said that he was able to get a great deal of subs in the game in the second half, including playing his JV players in the fourth quarter.

South Stanly travels to South Davidson (1-8, 1-4 YVC) on Friday night. The Wildcats played their second game this past week after the death of their head coach, Mike Crowell on Sept. 30.

Regarding the Wildcats, Fleming said that South Davidson “will come out and probably do things differently; I don’t know what to expect. we have to play like we are capable of playing.”
