West wins conference tourney

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 — The West Stanly wrestling team claimed victory at the 2012 Stanly County Wrestling Tournament held at South Stanly Saturday.

West won with scores of 54-30 over Albemarle, 56-24 over South Stanly and 63-9 over North.

The Bulls came in second place with wins over Albemarle (60-24) and North (48-18), while the Bulldogs topped the Comets 42-21 for third place.

Winners of the event in each individual class received a spot on the 2011-12 All-County squad.

West Stanly’s Wesley Gordon was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, winning the 160-pound title.

106 Pounds

South Stanly’s Cody Shields won two forfeit victories and earned a pinfall win over West’s Kyle Battisto to win the county title.

113 Pounds

North Stanly’s Winston Lee (21-4) had to go through three wrestlers in order to win the 2011-12 county title for the Comets at 113 pounds.

Lee earned pinfall wins over South’s Daniel Helms (1:31) and West’s Pavin Chunn (:35), and won a close decision over Albe-marle’s Grant Plyler 4-3 to take first place.

120 Pounds

Joseph Graves upped his individual record to 33-5 this season by taking the county title at 120 pounds for West Stanly.

126 Pounds

Nathan Marlow improved to 9-4 this season with three wins at the county meet to take the county title for West Stanly.

Marlow pinned South’s Patrick Cruz and Albe-marle’s Ross Plyler, while earning a decision win over North’s Jacob Huneycutt.

132 Pounds

Jonathan Surratt pinned three wrestlers on Saturday to earn the county title at 132 pounds for West Stanly.

Surratt got wins over Jordan Carpenter (SS), Alex Lee (NS) and Jesse Smith (A).

138 Pounds

The Colts continued to dominate the lower weight classes with another title, this one from Jonathan Lord at 138 pounds.

Lord (18-8) earned pinfall wins over South’s Jarrett Johnson and North’s Jakob Morrow, along with a forfeit win.

145 Pounds

Jordan Blake claimed another county title for West Stanly with a pinfall win over Bulldog Caleb Smith and a decision win over South’s Josh Lewellen, improving to 27-13 this season as an individual.

152 Pounds

South senior Drayton Diggs earned a forfeit win and two pinfall wins to claim the county title at 152 pounds.

Diggs (18-11) pinned West’s Jordan Doyle and North’s Jesse Heidel to claim the victory.

160 Pounds

Wrestling for the Colts as as sophomore, Gordon claimed the 160-pound title and improved to 20-12 this season.

Gordon pinned south’s Jarrett Johnson and earned a decision over North’s Ethan Kuehl.

170 Pounds

In the 170-pound division, two wrestlers finished with identical 1-0 records, splitting the title.

Albemarle’s Deshawn Jackson (16-8) pinned West’s Jordan Linker in 1:09, while South Stanly’s Sawyer Bartlett (24-18) earned a pinfall win over Linker as well.

182 Pounds

West Stanly’s Clint Gibson (7-16) was the seventh Colt to earn an individual county title on Saturday.

195 Pounds

Albemarle earned county titles in two of the three biggest weight classes on Saturday, including Derrick Young’s victory at 195 pounds.

The junior Bulldog wrestler (14-12) pinned West’s Eriksel Ramirez in a time of 51 seconds for the title.

220 Pounds

Freshman Jacob Deaton (12-11) gave Albemarle their third individual title win at the county meet.

285 Pounds

In the heavyweight division, Jonathan Beachum claimed the county title with two forfeit wins and a pinfall win over Albemarle’s Tyler Hatley.

Beachum improved his record to 16-23 this season.

The Yadkin Valley Conference and Rocky River Conference Tourna-ments will be this Saturday.
