Tuesday, July 7, 2009 — With clutch hitting and improved defense, the Uwharrie Bobcats, Stanly County’s 65-and-over slow-pitch softball team, are off to their best start in five years with an 11-7 record half way through the season.
On May 27, the Bobcats hosted a strong High Point team for a double-header at Rock Creek Park. The Bobcats took charge early by scoring five runs in the first inning and went on to win 9-2. In the second game, the Bobcats scored five runs in the sixth in a 14-10 win.
Salisbury’s first-ever 65-and-over team came to Rock Creek Park June 13 to play the Bobcats, winning the opener, 9-7. The Bobcats came back to defeat Salisbury 10-9 in the nightcap. Salisbury will return to Rock Creek Park July 25.
On June 17, the Bobcats hosted Winston-Salem. The Bobcats went on a hitting binge to get wins of 11-5 and 6-5. Home runs by Moody Lemons and Roger Faulkner led the hitting barrage in the first game. Trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning of the second game, Don Wait, Jerry Barrier, Ed Huneycutt, Oscar Shelton, and Lemons each scored a run to make the score 6-5.
The Bobcats traveled to Carthage June 27 for a four-team tournament. The Bobcats lost 14-11 to Pinehurst in the first game after starting off the first inning with three errors and allowing five runners to score. In the second game, the Bobcats defeated Burlington for the first time in five years in a slugfest, 17-15.
The Bobcats will host Pinehurst this Saturday at 10 a.m. for a doubleheader.
