Nikki Whitley, South Stanly
Pitchers
Nikki Whitley (SSHS): The District Six Player of the Year, Whitley was outstanding for the Bulls this season as a sophomore. She hit .429 from the plate with an on-base percentage of .475, scoring 17 runs and driving in 20 RBIs. Her pitching stats were outstanding, with 200 strikeouts compared to just 21 walks in 108 innings pitched, posting an ERA of 0.49. Whitley’s record was 10-4 this season, and only one of those losses came to a 1A school (East Surry, the eventual 1A state champions).
Morgan Fraley (NSHS): The No. 1 starter for North, Morgan was a star offensively and defensively for the Comets, hitting .383 and pitching with a 2.20 ERA for the season.
Emily B. Huneycutt (WSHS): As the main starter for the Colts, E.B. was sensational. In 130 innings pitched, Huneycutt had an ERA of only 0.93, which included 173 strikeouts to just 25 walks. She also was a strong fielding pitcher, as well as hitting .373 for the Colts with 14 RBIs.
Catchers
Shelby Green (WSHS): This Colt catcher was a solid defensive starter, along with providing offense from the third spot in the lineup. Green had a batting average this season of a.322 with 14 RBIs and a .400 on-base percentage.
Kodi Smith (SSHS): Smith was an offensive powerhouse for South Stanly. She hit .408 on the season and had an on-base percentage of .492, with 14 runs scored, 12 walks and 16 runs.
Infielders
Jessica Roberts (NSHS): Switching between third base and pitching, Roberts gave the pitching staff depth as well as being a clutch hitter, batting .440.
Chelsey Whitley (SSHS): Another All-RRC selection, Whitley hit .396 with an on-base percentage of .396 as well, with nine RBIs and 14 runs scored.
Emily D. Huneycutt (WSHS): Playing third base for the Colts, Emily D. Huneycutt hit .433 this season with a .444 on-base percentage and 10 RBIs.
Melissa Stallings (NSHS): The cleanup hitter for the Comets, Stallings hit .343 and fielded her position well.
Deanna Hulshult (WSHS): A top-flight defensive shortstop, Hulshult starred at the plate as well, hitting .446 with an on-base percentage of .488, 24 RBIs and four home runs.
Sommer Dennis (AHS): The Bulldogs’ starting third baseman provided offense and leadership for the young Albemarle team.
Lee Parrish (WSHS): West’s leadoff hitter and second baseman hit .380 for the season with an on-base percentage of .436.
Outfielders
Holli Chandler (NSHS): This freshman anchored the offense and the outfield defensively for the Comets in 2009. She was a strong leadoff hitter with a .507 batting average.
Kacey Huneycutt (WSHS) hit .385 for the Colts with a .436 on-base mark and fielded well in the outfield.
Brittany Beatty (WSHS) was named Honorable Mention All-Rocky River for the Colts, batting .394 with a .442 on-base percentage and 16 RBIs.
Hayley Swaringen (SSHS) patrolled the Bulls’ outfield well, throwing out several batters at home. She hit .352 with 12 RBIs an a .429 on-base mark.

After having been competitors for many years in both community leagues and at the K-8 basketball level, the first-year West Stanly Middle School Lady Colts’ basketball team claimed the Rocky River Middle School Athletic Conference (RRMSAC) title this season.

Junior Brittany Cox posted a double-double with 32 points and 13 rebounds in 33 minutes of action leading Pfeiffer University to a 90-64 victory at Converse College on Saturday afternoon.

Pfeiffer sweeps King 3-0
Quentin Moore registered a match-high 14 kills while the team defense posted 12 blocks as Pfeiffer Univer-sity swept past King College 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action Saturday afternoon.

Carolina Christian School (CCS) lost 52-42 to Covenant Classical (CC) Friday night.

The Carolina Christian Lady Lions improved to 18-2 on the season with a win over the Covenant Classical Lady Warriors.

Stanly County has been invaded. We now have feral hogs in some parts of Stanly County.

The South Stanly varsity boys struggled to find offense on Senior Night in a 60-31 loss Friday night to East Montgomery.

The Colts loss on the road at Piedmont Friday night was overshadowed by a scary injury to one of their players.
