Football Players annouce college plans

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 — South Stanly standout junior quarterback Desi Brown committed to play with East Carolina University on Monday morning.

Brown is one of three rising seniors at SSHS that are being heavily recruited on the heels of Terry Shankle graduating and joining the UNC Tar Heels this fall. Shankle is already in class at UNC and working out with the football team.

One other Rebel Bull from the class of 2009, James Watkins, will be playing in the East-West All-Star game in Greensboro this summer prior to joining Central Carolina Junior College in Greensboro as a linebacker.

The 6-2 205 lbs. Brown, who runs a 4.5 40, has been recruited by many schools as an athlete, but was recruited by ECU to play quarterback.

“The ECU quarterback coach came and watched Desi throw in the spring and was highly impressed,” said SSHS Coach Luke Little.

“Desi was ready to get the recruiting behind him and wanted a shot at quarterback in college.”

In addition to Brown, the Rebel Bulls’ other two rising seniors who are catching the eyes of college recruiters are Justin Taylor and Detric Allen.

Taylor, a 6-3 220 with 4.6 speed, will visit N.C. State this week with his mom and has narrowed his choices to the Wolfpack and Virginia Tech, according to Little.

“Justin has only played football one year, but he is being looked at as a linebacker or quick end,” Little said.

The third of the Rebel Bulls top prospects is Detric Allen, who has played quarterback, running back and safety for SSHS. The 6-0 180 Allen is being recruited as a defensive back by Duke, ECU, Louisville, Furman and Elon.

  • Charles Curcio.jpg Friday night is still the greatest night of the week

Of all the many sports that I cover during the year,  no sport requires more physical and mental effort, demanding more attention to detail than the coverage of high school football.
Football has long been arguably the most covered, most watched high school sport for many years, but with the advent of the internet and video cameras no bigger than a cell phone, everywhere you look people are covering prep football like never before.
