Tuesday, March 9, 2010 — After two tough games in near-freezing temperatures last week, the defending 1A state champion South Stanly baseball squad got into the winning column on a warmer Monday night.
The Rebel Bulls and head coach Terry Tucker got a strong performance both at the plate and on the mound as South Stanly earned a 10-0 Yadkin Valley Conference win over Gray Stone on their home field.
Freshman pitcher Jordan Starnes faced 16 batters, one over the minimum in five innings, to earn the win for South (1-2, 1-2).
Starnes had six strikeouts and allowed just one hit to Gray Stone (0-2, 0-2).
South got big offensive performances at the plate.
Brett Fraley was 3-4 for the Bulls with a double, a triple, and 5 RBIs.
Colten Burris added a home run, 2 RBIs and was 1-1 at the plate, while Grayson Short was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.
The win snapped a two-game slide for the Bulls as South will go on the road today for a Yadkin Valley Conference game at West Montgomery.
Gray Stone will also continue Yadkin Valley Conference play tonight at North Rowan tonight and Chatham Central on Friday.

Gray Stone’s first loss of the season came in their first game on Friday at West Montgomery.
The Warriors scored twice in the first inning, then put together back-to-back four-run frames and would claim the win in five innings over the Knights.
Walen Lineberry pitched four innings and allowed only one hit with six strikeouts in the win for West (2-0, 2-0).
Wes Hubbard took the loss for Gray Stone, though the Knights hurler posted five strikeouts in the loss. He also had a single to left field in the top of the fourth inning.
