Sunday, March 7, 2010 — The West Stanly baseball squad kicked off their 2010 season with two Rocky River Conference victories, both coming in just five innings invoking the 10-run rule.
West Stanly 10
Berry Academy 0
The Colts opened their season on the road Thursday night at Berry Academy with a 10-0 victory over the Cardinals
Zack Martin earned the win on the mound for West with nine strikeouts, allowing just one walk and two hits to Berry Academy.
Jeremy Lowder gave the Colts a good night at the plate, going 2-3 while Josh Cochran and Zack Huneycutt both were 1-3 with two RBIs each.
West Stanly 10
Union Academy 0
The Colts made it back-to-back 10-0 five-inning wins with the easy win over the Cardinals at home Friday.
Jace Whitley got the victory on the mound for the Colts (2-0), allowing just two hits while striking out six Union Academy batters.
Josh Cochran had a big night with the bat for West Stanly, going a perfect 3-3 and including a home run and three RBIs.
“We played very efficiently in the first two games. Our defense has been solid and we have gotten timely hitting and our trademark aggressive base-running,” West head coach David Lee said.
The Colts’ head coach talked about the lack of practice time that his squad has had so far.
“We did get to scrimmage the last two Saturdays, but practice has been sketchy for the past two weeks. The kids were enthusiastic about getting out on the field and it showed,” Lee said.
The Colts open up three games in three nights on Tuesday when they travel to North Stanly for a Rocky River Conference game with the Comets.
On Wednesday, the Colts travel to Ardrey Kell for a game with the defending 4A champions.
Then on Thursday, West Stanly hosts the defending private school champions in Charlotte Christian in a JV/Varsity doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
