American Legion Auxiliary Unit 520 fundraiser
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 520 in Albemarle will ask for
donations and distributing Buddy Poppies in honor of Veterans Day,
Nov. 5 and Nov. 11, in the Goody’s Shopping Center from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The poppies are made by veterans in VA hospitals throughout the United
States and have become a memorial symbol. The use of the Buddy Poppy
stems from the war poem, “In Flanders Field,” by John McCrae.
Applebee's to thank veterans and troops
Applebee’s, 517 NC 24/27 Bypass E., Albemarle, will thank veterans and
troops on Nov. 11 by offering a free signature meal. Wear your cap,
jacket, lapel pin, shirt or uniform to show your pride in our country.
Proof of military service is required.
145th AW Conducts ‘Salute’ Event to Recognize Airmen

145th Airlift Wing Commander Pins on First Star
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The men and women of North Carolina Air National Guard’s 145th Airlift Wing gathered yesterday as the commander of the 145th Airlift Wing, Tony E. McMillan was promoted to the brigadier general rank. North Carolina’s Adjutant General, Major General Gregory A. Lusk presided over the ceremony at the NCANG base here.
Pfeiffer students serve veterans at V.A. Medical Center
Pfeiffer University students and staff commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by serving veterans at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury.
Stanly Community College concludes operation ‘Thank You, Soldier’
A 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony was recently held on the Albemarle campus of Stanly Community College (SCC). This project was initiated by SCC’s Service Learning Division to honor the men and women of our armed forces serving overseas.
Final Flight of Honor
Troy Alexander, 86, of Albemarle, was among 120 World War II veterans to visit the memorial honoring their service during the final Flight of Honor trip Saturday.
NCANG to Fight Texas Fires
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Carolina Air National Guard’s 145th Airlift Wing, based here, will send two aircraft equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) to Texas, Saturday morning, Sept. 10, to fight wild fires raging in central Texas. The 145th received notification of the mission today.
